Thursday 4/5 Call to Action

Thursday 4/5

1. Tariffs
In response to Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on China’s goods, China has decided they will impose tariffs on American goods. Exports are extremely important to Minnesota, and China is our top export for soybeans. It is unclear yet when these tariffs will be in effect, but now is the time to pressure our representatives to push back against Trump’s decision.
  • Minnesota is the fourth largest exporting state in the U.S.
  • Minnesota’s top exporting commodities are soybeans, corn, pork, and soybean meal
  • In Minnesota agricultural exports support more than 57,000 jobs both on-farm and off-farm.

2. Student Support Services
When it comes to student support services, Minnesota spends less than half of the national average. As the saying goes, it takes a village. With all the challenges that students face today a point person in a support staff role can make all the difference in the world. “Early identification, prevention and intervention efforts that incorporate a multitiered system of supports and services have proved to be most effective. A multitiered system includes school-employed mental health providers such as licensed school social workers, school counselors, school psychologists and school nurses. Unfortunately, Minnesota lags far behind other states in providing students with adequate access to these professionals. We must do better.” Let your local representatives know if this is important to you.

3. The Next Generation Has The Power to Change
Tufts University has ranked Minnesota as one of the top states where young voters can make a difference in November’s elections. If we want to elicit change, we need to make sure that their voices are heard. We need to keep them motivated to show up to the polls and VOTE! Check it out here: https://civicyouth.org/youthvote2018/
One way you can do this it so show up for MneverAgain’s Town Hall Project. Minnesota’s student leaders have sent out a call to action for Minnesota’s elected officials. They have created their own town hall during Congress’ spring break. Let’s support them by writing legislators and encouraging them to attend. The town hall will be on April 7th. If you have kids in your life who want to make a change, encourage them to attend the event. Let’s commit to attending as well to show our support. This is really exciting!

4. Become an Election Judge
Are you looking for a way to contribute to your community? Why not become an election judge? You will help elections run safely, and smoothly while learning how the government ticks. It’s a paid gig, so it’s a great way to help democracy work while making some $$. Read more about it here. http://www.sos.state.mn.us/…/get-…/become-an-election-judge/
5. The United States Congress is on spring break this week so it’s a perfect time to focus on what’s happening at Minnesota’s Capitol.

Tax Day Rally at the Capitol,
On Sunday, April 15th join fellow Minnesotans in protesting tax laws that benefit the richest Americans at the expense of the poor and working classes. Let’s get together and tell our government that we want them make laws the benefit the majority, not just their pocketbooks and election campaigns.
