Tuesday 4/3 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Sinclair Broadcasting Group
Sinclair Broadcasting Group (SBG) is a notoriously biased, conservative broadcasting company that forces their member TV stations to spin news in favor of Trump and air clips from controversial talking heads like Sebastian Gorka and Boris Epshteyn. (Think Fox News at the local level.) SBG is already the largest owner of television stations owning 38% of them across the United States, the limit allowed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). SBG is looking to Ajit Pai, chairman of the FCC, to change this rule so that they can purchase Tribune Media. If the rule is changed, SBG will own 70% of television stations across the country! Replacing the truth with propaganda will hurt America and democracy.

You may have seen the outrageous video created by Deadspin that shows countless local television journalists parroting the same message about “fake news”. Watch it here: https://theconcourse.deadspin.com/how-americas-largest-loca…
Currently, Minnesota has only one station owned by Sinclair, the CW. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WUCW If they manage to purchase Tribune Media, there may be more.

Want to take action? Check out Postcards for America’s call to action. It has everything you need to get started. Not a big fan of postcards? Use this guide to call your members of Congress. While you’re at it, call you local TV station and remind them how important it is to deliver truthful, unbiased news. https://docs.google.com/…/13ZodxJ59xEqfLDNRsLIU…/mobilebasic
2. 3M Water Settlement Meeting Tonight
In February, Attorney General Lori Swanson announced a $850 million settlement in Minnesota’s lawsuit against the company 3M over water contamination by perfluorochemicals (PFCs) in eastern Twin Cities suburbs. The money will be used to fund drinking water and water sustainability projects for the areas affected by the contamination.

If you are one of the many affected by this, you can attend the 3M settlement public meeting tonight in Cottage Grove. It will be from 6-8 pm at Park High School (8040 80th Street South)
The meeting will provide an overview of the settlement and explain the projects that are planned. Staff from the Minnesota Department of Health will be there to answer questions.
3. MNeverAgain Town Hall Project
Minnesota’s student leaders have sent out a call to action for Minnesota’s elected officials. They have created their own town hall during Congress’ spring break. Let’s support them by writing legislators and encouraging them to attend. The town hall will be on April 7th. If you have kids in your life who want to make a change, encourage them to attend the event. Let’s commit to attending as well to show our support. This is really exciting!

It’s a paid gig, so it’s a great way to help democracy work while making some $$. Read more about it here. http://www.sos.state.mn.us/…/get-…/become-an-election-judge/
5. The United States Congress is on spring break this week so it’s a perfect time to focus on what’s happening at Minnesota’s Capitol.

Tax Day Rally at the Capitol,
On Sunday, April 15th join fellow Minnesotans in protesting tax laws that benefit the richest Americans at the expense of the poor and working classes. Let’s get together and tell our government that we want them make laws the benefit the majority, not just their pocketbooks and election campaigns.
