Friday 10.12 Call to action

Friday
Scream Town Shut Down Due to Racist Remarks
Scream Town, a popular Halloween haunted experience in Carver County, has been shut down due to disparaging comments the owner, Matt Dunn, made about Somali-American customers. Dunn posted a message to Scream Town employees in a secret Facebook group saying, “Note that we are having a zero-tolerance policy with Somalis. (Other guests, you can make your best judgment call.) But absolutely zero tolerance with Somalis.” Sigh.
Dunn has since apologized for his remarks. The executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), Jaylani Hussein has publicly accepted Dunn’s apology and has asked the community to move forward. Carver County officials, however, are not satisfied with just an apology and have determined that Dunn’s statement violated local and federal anti-discrimination laws as well as Scream Town’s contract with the Sheriff’s Office for security, traffic and crowd control.
This story is a great example of why it is so very important for us to elect leaders who will follow the laws and do the right thing. Our laws mean nothing if our leaders refuse to follow them and our courts refuse to hold them accountable.
Check out this story that happened in Texas.
In Waller County Texas (a community that’s population is 70% Caucasian), there is a historically black University, Prairie View A&M University. The Waller County government has a long history of suppressing the votes of students who attend this school. After the government made another attempt to prevent student from voting, Democratic Congressional candidate Mike Siegel had one of his campaign field directors deliver a letter to the country demanding the country fix the problem so the students could vote. The campaign worker, Jacob Aronowitz, delivered the letter and snapped a photo of the county clerk to serve a proof that the letter was received. Shortly after, Aronowitz was arrested and taken to jail and his phone was confiscated. Aronowitz remembers being asked what political party he represented before being arrested. Does this alarm you? It should.

If we don’t pick better leaders in November, thing like this will happen more frequently. Elections have consequences.
Defend Our Right to Protest
There are less than 300 comments and the deadline for commenting on the anti-protest rules Trump and Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke have proposed is this MONDAY, OCTOBER 15; these rules would impose steep fees and costs on demonstrators as well as placing onerous restrictions on all demonstrations in Washington, D.C that use parkland controlled by the National Park Service---that includes the National Mall, Lafayette Park, the White House Sidewalk, Lincoln Memorial, the Ellipse, Freedom Plaza, and the sidewalks and parkland along Pennsylvania Avenue, including the sidewalk in front of the Trump Hotel.

Border Wall
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will be introducing legislation this week to fully fund Trump’s border wall. https://www.cnn.com/…/kevin-mccarthy-border-wall…/index.html
Let’s make sure to tell our MoCs that we think the wall is a waste of taxpayer money as it will not do what it is expected to do.

Here’s a way to use social media to support candidates we support. Let’s take a look: https://sterbalssundrystudies.miraheze.org/…/Helping_the_ca…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
