Friday 10/19 Call to Action

Are you ready to get out this weekend and help get your neighbors to the polls? If we don’t elect better leaders in November (at the state and federal levels), Trump and the GOP will be emboldened to continue stomping on our rights and democratic norms at a breakneck pace. This is our last chance, people. Volunteer because the stakes have never been higher.
Campaigns are combining forces in a big push to Get Out The Vote. Minnesota’s DFL is coordinating door knocking and phone banking events throughout Minnesota. Sign up here for as many times as you can handle. After midterms, when you look back and wonder if you were part of the solution, what you do in these next few weeks will be a big part of your answer. Do it! Volunteer.
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push.
Here’s some great news from Secretary of State Steve Simon to give you a boost. Minnesota has TRIPLED the number of absentee ballots cast this year compared to the same point in 2014. Minnesota is even ahead of the pace for 2016! When people get out to vote, it is usually a great sign for Democrats. High fives, everybody!…/minnesotans-outpacing-2016-p…/
North Dakota Voter Suppression
Our neighbors to our west in North Dakota elected Heidi Heitkamp, a Democratic senator in 2012 with the help from the Native American vote. Shortly after the 2012 election, the GOP started working on a way to fix that. The solution was to create North Dakota’s controversial voter ID law, which requires residents to show identification with a current street address. A P.O. box does not qualify. Many people, like North Dakota Native Americans, who live in rural areas do not have street addresses but instead us PO boxes at the post office. This law is a laser focused way to prevent them from voting.…/many-native-ids-wont-be-accepted-at-n……/gop-aims-to-suppress-nd-native-amer…&
Tribal leaders are fighting back. They are working around the clock to provide updated identification cards, or address verification documents to tribal citizens so that they may vote on November 6th. These documents cost money. Another Trump Ethics Violation
President Trump personally intervened to stop the FBI from moving its headquarters from Washington to the suburbs, helping his bottom line by reducing competition for his flagship DC hotel located across the street from the current FBI building. A member of the General Services Administration was caught lying under oath to Congress about it as well. Read more about it here:…/trump-hotel-fbi-headquarte…
Keith Ellison
It is imperative that we help Keith Ellison get elected as Attorney General in Minnesota. In light of the state of federal government and the Supreme Court, we have to have an Attorney General who will protect our rights at the state level. Rep. Ellison’s opponent, Doug Wardlow has made it clear that he would take away a woman’s right to make decisions about her own healthcare, further marginalize the LGBTQ community, and cast out Democrats from Minnesota’s judicial branch.
I have to admit, at first I was wary of supporting Rep. Ellison. Thankfully, last week CD2Action attended a meeting with Ellison and posted some video highlights on their page. Take the time to watch the congressman explain his ideas. I bet that like me, you will feel much more confident putting your support behind his campaign. Once you do, be sure to share your support on social media. The stakes are very high in this one.
Check out the Ellison clips here:…/
Update: The racist, ultra far-right propaganda outlet, Alpha News along with The Star Tribune (what the heck, Strib?) took legal action to force Keith Ellison to release his divorce records. The records revealed no evidence of domestic abuse for Rep. Ellison. Coincidentally, Ellison’s opponent, Doug Wardlow, appears to be an Alpha News sweetheart.
Start Tribune, do better. If you want to call the Strib and tell them that in person, here you go:
Minnesota Supreme Court
Ah, those pesky judges on the back of the ballot. It’s hard enough to keep up with the candidates on the front side! Make sure you pay special attention to the race between Margaret Chutich and Michelle MacDonald for Minnesota’s Supreme Court. Chutich was appointed by Governor Dayton in 2016. She is well liked by her peers and her community, and is seen as a fair and effective judge. On the other hand, MacDonald had her law license suspended for 60 days pointing to professional misconduct allegations dating back to 2013. She wants to abolish Minnesota’s family court system and she was involved in a messy drunk driving case where she refused to submit a breath test and obstructed the legal process during her traffic stop. This is easy, mark your ballot for Margaret Chutich and tell others to do so as well.…/…/

The Secretary of State’s website has all the information you need to get your vote on. You can apply for an absentee ballot, figure out where to vote and even get a sample ballot so you can do your research ahead of time.
Who says Democrats don’t have policies? Here are great graphics on Democratic positions to read and share. Let’s spread the word! If we are on twitter, we can also retweet this thread here…/…/1052014303044427778
