Thursday 10/18 Call to Action

Thursday 10/18

1. Honest Ads Act
We are well aware adversaries are manipulating social media to turn us against each other. Twitter has found more than 10 million posts tied to Russian and Iranian accounts starting back in 2009. Now would be a good time to pass Senator Klobuchar’s Honest Ads Act. We all deserve transparency.

2. GOP rushes to confirm more judges.
Democrats agreed to confirm one last slate of Trump’s judges last week before recess to come home and campaign. Yesterday the truce broke and the GOP are rushing new confirmations.
Republicans on the Judiciary Committee convened yet another hearing to consider still more conservative federal court nominees — while the Senate was technically in recess. Incensed Democrats boycotted the proceedings, but their empty chairs did not prevent candidates for the bench, such as Allison Rushing, 36, a social conservative nominated by President Trump to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, from taking a crucial step toward confirmation.”

3. Jamal Khashoggi disappearance
The Trump administration and the Saudi royal family are searching for a mutually agreeable explanation for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi — one that will avoid implicating Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is among the president’s closest foreign allies, according to analysts and officials in multiple countries.”

President Trump says the U.S. has requested audio and video relating to the disappearance of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who has not been seen since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, per AP.”

When Obama bowed to the Saudis the right wing was up in arms for years. Now that Trump is trying to cover up for the Saudis murdering an American journalist, the right wing doesn’t seem to care.

Eleven Democrats are asking Trump and his sons at Trump Organization to turn over information regarding any business ties to Saudi Arabia.

4. Educators paying for classroom school supplies.
“WCCO partnered with the teachers union to ask its members questions surrounding how much they spend out-of-pocket, and what they’re purchasing. Forty-one percent of those who answered estimate they spend between $251-$500 a year, 33 percent estimate more than $500, and nine percent say they spend more than $1,000.
Almost 75 percent of educators say they do not get reimbursed for the supplies they buy — the same percentage that doesn’t raise money to off-set costs.
Most rely on their own pocketbooks, or the generosity of their community.”

“Public school teachers’ economic prospects have worsened dramatically since the beginning of the Great Recession, especially in poorer states.
The average national salary has decreased by more than 4 percent since 2009, adjusted for inflation. Yet nine in 10 teachers buy some of their own teaching supplies, spending an average of almost $500 a year.
About 18 percent have a second job, making teachers about five times more likely than the average full-time worker to have a part-time job.
No surprise, then, that 8 percent of teachers leave the profession each year, compared with 5 percent a few decades ago; that 20 to 30 percent of all beginning teachers leave within five years, the Learning Policy Institute says, and two-thirds of teachers quit before retirement; that enrollment in college teacher education programs dropped 35 percent between 2009 and 2014.”
It’s time we invest in our educators. We need to do more to help them.
