Wednesday 10/3 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. FBI Finished with Investigation
The FBI's investigation into sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh could be concluding today. While some key witnesses have been interviewed by the FBI, other important leads have not been pursued. The results of the investigation will only be released to members of the Senate. It all seems pretty flimsy to me. Read more about it here (https://www.nytimes.com/…/kavanaugh-fbi-background-check.ht…) and then contact Senators Klobuchar and Smith and ask them to speak out against this anemic investigation.
If you haven’t already, now is the time to make some noise against Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Check out this handy toolkit that will help you do your best. http://www.pfaw.org/…/protec…/toolkit-stop-brett-kavanaugh/…
Word on the street is that one of the reasons the Republicans are so eager to push through Kavanaugh’s confirmation is that the case Gamble v. United States is scheduled to be considered by the Supreme Court in October. The 150-year-old exception to the Fifth Amendment’s double-jeopardy clause allows state and federal courts to prosecute the same person for the same criminal offense. Within the context of the Mueller probe, legal observers have seen the dual-sovereignty doctrine as a check on President Donald Trump’s power: It could discourage him from trying to shut down the Mueller investigation or pardon anyone caught up in the probe, because the pardon wouldn’t be applied to state charges. Republicans hope to seat Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court so he can be the deciding vote to toss this case, then Trump’s pardon could theoretically protect Manafort and other guilty players from state action. https://www.theatlantic.com/…/trump-pardon-orrin-ha…/571285/
2. The New York Times Reports on Trump’s Wealth
Trump likes to claim that he’s a self-made man. “But an investigation by The New York Times has revealed that Donald Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father’s real estate empire. What’s more, much of this money came to Mr. Trump through dubious tax schemes he participated in during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, The Times found. In all, the president’s parents transferred well over $1 billion in wealth to their children, which could have produced a tax bill of at least $550 million under the 55 percent tax rate on gifts and inheritances that was in place at the time. Helped by a variety of tax dodges, the Trumps paid $52.2 million, or about 5 percent, tax returns show.”

3. The GOP Are Spending Big $$ in The Suburbs
Republicans are funneling money to suburban state elections in an attempt to hold on to their lead in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The best way to combat their efforts is to get out and volunteer for a local DFL campaign. Read the article here and get inspired to act. https://www.minnpost.com/…/if-early-spending-is-any-indic…/…
4. Trump’s Gonna Text You
Apparently, all Americans with a cell phone will receive a text alert from Trump today. The alert is due to come in at 11:18 pm Pacific time. I don’t know about you but this makes me very uncomfortable. Keep an eye on your phones today to see what becomes of this.

Many of us may feel overworked, over scheduled, and under-slept, but have the desire to get out the vote for the November midterms. We can join MoveOn’s texting team and transform the tiny bits of time in our week into progressive action in key jurisdictions across the country.https://front.moveon.org/join-moveon-text-team/

Here’s a way to use social media to support candidates we support. Let’s take a look: https://sterbalssundrystudies.miraheze.org/…/Helping_the_ca…
National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far. Let’s see if we can help:https://www.crowdpac.com/…/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-k…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
Sister District Action Network did a study on the impact of postcards on voter registration and released the results showing positive results:https://mailchi.mp/…/dark-money-fireside-chat-and-critical-… Let’s read the report and keep on writing postcards!
