1. Puerto Rico Disaster Relief

Yesterday the House approved disaster relief funding for hurricane and wildfire victims including the residents of Puerto Rico.

The overwhelming majority of the House voted to approve this aid except for 69 Republicans. In that group of “No” votes were Reps. Tom Emmer and Jason Lewis. If you call one of these your congressman, you should call them ASAP. What a jerky thing to do. Also, call our senators and encourage them to pass this relief package quickly. There is a lot of suffering going on lately.

2. Keep Your Hands off Our Land

Thanks for this idea DH. HR 3990, the National Monument Creation and Protection Act is set to take down the Antiquities Act. What does the Antiquities Act do? It gives the president the power to preserve American land by declaring it a National Monument. The GOP and the Trump administration would like to shrink the size of many of America’s national monuments and open up the land to mining and fossil fuel drilling. These areas must be preserved for future generations. We have a fixed amount of land here. Once these areas are pillaged they will never be the same again.

In the House version of the 2018 budget resolution, there is a provision that allows for oil drilling in pristine Arctic refuges. The Senate Budge Committee will be considering the same thing on October 16. This Arctic refuge is one of the few areas on Earth that is largely untouched by human hands. Biological processes continue here as they have for millennia. If we disturb this land for drilling, it will never be the same again.

3. I am dismayed by how quickly the GOP and the Trump administration have taken to dismantling the structures and norms of our government. It is overwhelming trying to keep up with it all. Our best chance to stop this for good is to vote many of them out in 2018. What can you do today to encourage voter registration? How can you support quality candidates? How can we motivate those who didn’t vote in the last election to get out and participate. It is time to start focusing on this.
