Wednesday 10/4 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Unified Framework for Fixing Our Broken Tax Code
Here’s a secret that your GOP legislators don’t want to tell you. Trump’s new tax plan will raise taxes for the middle class. It will also INCREASE the deficit. How can these fiscal hawks justify this? Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin claims that the new tax plan will cause the economy to grow at such a rate that the tax cuts will pay for themselves. The corporations will trickle down their record setting profits to benefit the middle class. This has never happened before and it is unlikely to happen now.

This article from the Guardian explains that Trump’s tax cut will benefit the top 1% of earners (including Trump!) and will raise taxes for one in four households. https://www.theguardian.com/…/trump-tax-plan-benefit-riches…
If you are like me, taxes are complicated and difficult to talk about with any acuity. Indivisible guide has compiled some great, easy to understand information as well as calling scripts. Check it out and give your members of Congress a call. https://www.trumptaxscam.org/
If you are a tax wiz and crunch numbers for breakfast, check out this analysis from the Tax Policy Center. http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/…/preliminary-analysis-…/full
Hopefully, now you are prepared to give your members of Congress a call. Remember, you can always text them a message as well via Resistbot: https://resistbot.io/ Just do it.
2. Update on Gun Control
Yesterday was chock full of disappointing news (e.g., 20 week abortion restriction, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai gets to stay, United States votes against homosexuals at the UN). One good thing that happened is that House Speaker Ryan postponed a vote on the SHARE Act indefinitely. This bill had two additions that loosened restrictions on gun silencers and armor piercing bullets. I can’t help but think that an overwhelming negative response from people like you and me helped push that bill to the back burner. Nice work.https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/04575ce6-a848-11e7-b3aa-c0…
It is being reported that many of the weapons used to kill/maim hundreds of concert goers last Sunday were modified with “bump stocks” which allow semi-automatic rifles to shoot in rapid succession, much like automatic rifles. Senator Diane Feinstein is leading a movement that closes the loophole that allows for the legal sale of these bump stocks. Let’s call our senators and representative and encourage them to support closing this loophole for good.

3. Misc.
So much is going on at once. It is difficult to be mindful of it all. Don’t forget that Puerto Rico, DACA Dreamers, and families on CHIP still need our help.
