Tuesday 10/3 Call to Action

Tuesday
Let’s talk about guns in America
America is by far the most violent developed nation on the planet, thanks to the ubiquity of guns. The U. S. has significantly more guns per capita as well as gun related homicides than any other developed country. Since the sickening events of Sandy Hook where 20 little children were killed in their classrooms, there have been 1,518 mass shooting in America. This averages out to about one mass shooting per day. Still, most guns deaths are suicides. The correlation is clear: more guns and looser gun restrictions = more deaths.
Want more gun statistics? This article is quite useful: https://www.vox.com/…/us-gun-violence-statistics-maps-charts
It seems like the NRA has a strangle hold on our elected officials, particularly if they have an “R” after their name. Why is that? The NRA has given money to our members of Congress (including Paulsen, Lewis, Emmer, Walz, and Peterson) but the amount is not as much as other lobby groups. One article I read suggested that MoC’s are beholden because Second Amendment/gun right supporters are a loud, constant voice in their ears. They are the squeaky wheel. Now it’s time for us to become that squeaky wheel. Make today’s call to action a weekly chore until this madness stops.
1. What to do today: Call your MoC’s and ask them to give specific details about what they will do to prevent another tragedy like the one in Las Vegas.
2. Tell them to vote NO on the following:
A. SHARE Act- Among other things, this bill would loosen restrictions on purchasing gun silencers and armor piercing bullets. The House is scheduled to vote on this week. (This bill was originally scheduled for a vote on the day Rep. Scalise was shot at baseball practice- perhaps the universe trying to say something.)

B. Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act (HR 38)- this would allow individuals to carry concealed weapons across state lines https://www.countable.us/…/hr38-115-concealed-carry-recipro…
3. Tell them to support the following:
A. Gun manufacturers should be responsible for damages incurred by gun violence: https://www.dallasnews.com/…/eric-garland-like-big-tobacco-…
B. It is time for the CDC to study gun violence again. It has been defunded and put on hold since 1996! Tell your MoC it’s time to repeal the Dickey Amendment. http://www.latimes.com/…/la-fi-hiltzik-gun-research-funding…
4. Time for you to take action
