Tuesday 10/17 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Tax Scam
The Senate will be voting on Trump’s tax plan this Thursday. Now is the time to make your voice heard. What the GOP has dressed up as middle class relief is actually big tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and huge cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. The GOP has been disseminating a lot of propaganda about this plan (I for one have received plenty from my dear congressman). If you are like me, the complexities of the tax system (and math) make it difficult to fight back intelligently. Check out this article from economist Paul Krugman. It gives you some nice Cliff notes on the most popular claims about this tax plan.
Lies such as:
1. America has the highest tax rates in the world
2. The estate tax is bad for truckers and farmers
3. Cutting taxes on profits is good for employees
The list goes on. Give it a read!

Call your senators and give them your support. Write a letter to your local paper. Tweet about this to you MoC’s. We cannot allow them to pass this without a fight.

2. Health Care for Some
Thanks to D. R. for this idea.
Former Health and Human Services secretary Tom Price may have flown off into the sunset in a fancy private jet, but his legacy lives on at HHS. Price’s strategic plan for the department involves much more conservative Christian ideas and much less Obamacare. It gives credence to anti-abortion tenets but neglects implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The HHS plan also leaves minority groups (African Americans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) with little protection.
You can see the effects of this in the news:
Trump’s Executive Order handicapping the Affordable Care Act
Trump’s decision to let companies opt out of provided birth control based on religious beliefs Trump’s efforts to stack the judicial branch with ultra-conservative judges
The Affordable Care Act is the law and it should be treated as such. The Trump administration seems hell bent on changing the rules that protect the most vulnerable among us.

What can you do? Call your senators and voice your concern. HHS is accepting public comment about the plan until October 27th. If you would like to leave a comment, click on the HHS link above. At the bottom of each page of the HHS Strategic Plan, there is a comment box. Here are some other options:

3. Don’t Forget to Vote!
On Tuesday, November 7th election day for local government issues is happening throughout Minnesota. Remember, change happens from the bottom up. These elections are important so take time to educate yourself about what will be on the ballot in your community. Make sure you are registered to vote (although in Minnesota, you can register at the polls). Be sure you know where to go to vote. Sometime voting precincts are combined in these smaller elections.
