Thursday, 10/5 Call To Action

1. MINER Act
Thank you to D.R. for bringing this to our attention. Rep. Tom Emmer has introduced legislation for dangerous mining adjacent to the Boundary Waters. How many have you have been to the Boundary Water? I have. It was one of the most beautiful and unforgettable trips I have ever taken. My hope is to take my own family there when they are a bit bigger. This bill will not protect the BWCA, it will allow dangerous sulfide-ore mining and poison the Boundary Waters. You can read about the bill here.

If Congresswomen McCollum is your rep., you can thank you for speaking out against this bill.

2. CHIP and open enrollment
In the words of Andy Slavitt, “Every day CHIP isn’t enacted is a day we aren’t meeting our commitment to children.”
“The Senate Finance Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee each have scheduled a mark-up on October 4, 2017 on separate bills to extend funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).  CHIP was established in 1997 with bipartisan support and allows states to cover children in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot access or afford private insurance. Every state has a CHIP program, and nearly all states cover children at least up to 200% of the federal poverty level ($40,840/year for a family of 3 in 2017). CHIP covered nearly 9 million children in 2016, and, together with Medicaid, has helped reduce the uninsured rate for children to a record low of 5%.”

Open enrollment for health insurance starts November 1 and ends December 15. It is up to us to spread the word and let others get covered. People who don’t sign up will be unable to buy individual insurance through the ACA.

3. Misc.
I feel like with everything that is going on it’s hard to stress which is more important. Continue to make noise about Gun Control, DACA, Puerto Rico and the USVI, 20 week abortion bill, etc.
